Title: Rudder repairs
Post by: jimbo3007 (Guest) on 09 Sep 2006, 03:20
The rudder on my boat has some chips in the back edge, the biggest are about 10mm across and about 5mm deep. How should I repair this? The rudder is made of wood and is a foil shape. I assume I use epoxy but how do I mould it to the shape of the rudder? Thanks in advance.

I thouhght 1 pot was sufficient but more importantly you had to ensure that any amine blush (clouding of surface)  was removed,

I Wwested my original D8 rudder blade this winter but would not again.. the trailing edge has become v brittle and have had it crack across the grain.  I did it to remove any fiture need to varnish it and also to improve its wear characteristics,

Frall small jobs involving epoxy parcel tape ( the brown mylar stuff) is your best mate. Eposcy doesnt stick to it. For a small chip a single piece of tabe folded over the edge will hold the shape for you. For larger reconstrcutions a piece of parcel coated v thin ply each side clamed down will maintain the shape for you.
