Racing

Racing will commence on Saturday, but our Class Measurers will be available from Friday afternoon, with the scales, to offer check weighing of your boat.  The weighing will be available on Friday between 15.00 hrs and up to say 18.00? Also on Saturday morning from 09.00 hrs until 11.15. When you arrive just add your name to the measurers list and they will give you a shout when they are ready for you.  This is not compulsory, but this is a chance to know the current weight of your boat and if you get picked for measurement during the event you already have the weighing done!

The measurers will be check weighing and getting their own boats rigged so measurement of sails will not be high on their agenda.  Please try to get this done before the event or if that is not possible then contact them in advance to agree a suitable time, see the contacts page.

Please note that there will be a briefing on Saturday at 11.30 and the first race start time will be 13.00 hrs, this is earlier than usual due to tide times.  The scheduled start time for the remaining days will be 11.00 hrs.

Notices will also be posted on the event WhatsApp  Group  WhatsApp QR Code

Burton Week 2022 is sponsored by Sponsor Allen Brothers of Essex are major suppliers of sailing fittings are giving us generous sponsorship again, so there will be extra prizes and vouchers will be awarded.  There will be boom stickers for your boat available at registration.

This event is also part of the N12 Dinghy Shack Dinghy Shack National Series and there will be separate prizes for this series.  Bow stickers will be available at registration

Buddies

Everyone will be part of a buddy team and each day’s winning team will win a prize.  The aim is for each team to have a mix of experience and skills which they can share, hopefully those new to Burton Week or the Twelve Class will find this useful.

Trophies

There are lots of trophies to be won, you will automatically be entered for some of them, but some need you to show on your entry form whether you meet the qualifications. We will acknowledge your entry and confirm the trophies you are eligible for. A list of subsidiary trophy entrants will be displayed soon after registration, but please let the Race Office know ASAP if your entry is not correct, before any results begin to appear!

If you have trophies to return remember to get them engraved, and please, please return them as clean as you received them a year ago!!  Please take them to the Race Office when you register on Saturday.

Tallies

There will be a helm and crew wristband tally system in use for safety and as your race declaration.  Those of you who have used this system before know that forgetting to tally means losing your position in races or paying £10 to the RNLI!  If you have not used tallies before please ask about it at the Race Office.

Socials

allen logo  are again sponsoring the Twelve Class Championships and there will be extra prizes during the event from local sponsor Billie Box  Billie Box and the Heart of Suffolk Distillery Heart of Suffolk Distillery

Friday: The bar will be open for early arrivals.

Saturday: Beach Games and meet your buddy + buddy prizes

Sunday: Burton Dinner & Burton Cup Prize Giving with prizes from sponsor ‘Heart of Suffolk Distillery

Monday: NTOA AGM + ‘Heart of Suffolk Distillery’ Gin Tasting

Tuesday: Prize Giving

As well as four days of sailing the clubhouse will be the place to catch up with old friends or, if this is your first time at Burton Week to meet the fleet, Twelve sailors are well known for their willingness to talk about their boats with like-minded sailors!

There will be a ‘buddy’ system organised, newcomers and old hands in each buddy group to help each other, both in getting to know people and how to get the best from the boats and sailing.  The list of buddy teams will be published on the notice boards as soon as possible on Saturday.  If you don’t know what your buddies look like please ask at the Race Office and we will help you to find them.

The Club will be open throughout the event with food and drinks from breakfast onwards.

The National Twelve Class AGM will be held early on Monday evening.  Find out what your Committee have been doing and have your say about what you would like to see happen in the future.  Better still why not join the Committee.  Apart from some officers like the Chair, Secretary etc. to carry out the basics of the Class organisation, we really need to have active sailors with us who can help to give the membership what is needed. The Committee hold a few meetings during the year, now held on Zoom.

The Burton Week dinner, a three course meal, will be held on Sunday evening at the Club, and the dress code is simply, smart casual.  Hopefully the Burton Cup race will have been sailed that day and the Cup and other related prizes will be presented after the meal.  Also the Decanter Trophy and the infamous Burton Brick!
Make sure to book your dinner tickets with your entry, we need to know the numbers early.  Don’t forget to add any dietary choices you may have.

Tuesday, the last day will have two races and we will try to get the results out as quickly as we can, the final prize giving will be held and hopefully you will not be too late heading for home!

Getting there & accommodation

Getting there.

Felixstowe Ferry is a hamlet in Suffolk approximately two miles northeast of Felixstowe.  It is at the mouth of the River Deben with a foot ferry to the Bawdsey peninsula. This takes 5 minutes and runs from 10.00 until 17.00 and may suit non-competitors. From the A14 follow the signs to Felixstowe Ferry, after passing the golf club you will reach the Ferry Boat Inn on your left and see the club dinghy park on your right.  The clubhouse is on the right just beyond the end of the dinghy park.

There will be a designated area on the seaward side of the Club dinghy park for the Twelves, but cars should not stay on the dinghy park.

There is free car parking just across the road on the common land opposite the dinghy park in the area between the dinghy park and the Inn, but please do not park in the spaces immediately in front of the Ferry Boat Inn, this is for their customers.  PLEASE park tidily to make best use of the available space.

There is also a public pay and display car park opposite the sailing club, but please do not park on the road in this area or on the small gravel area to the front of the Club. All this area is privately owned.

Accommodation

Camping for tents only will be available on the Millennium Green opposite the dinghy park. A fee of £7.50 per tent, per night, will be charged by the landowner, this will be collected by Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club at registration.

Motor Homes will be parked in an area at the end of the dinghy park, the fee is still to be confirmed but should be paid at registration.

Tents and Motor Homes spaces should be booked in advance by email, in the first instance to: ntoa@national12.org.  Please specify what you require.

There are some hotels and B & B’s in Felixstowe, also self-catering including Airbnb. That journey to the Club will take about 15-20 minutes.

IMPORTANT WARNING – It might sound tempting to look at accommodation near Bawdsey, but this is on the opposite shore of the River Deben!  There is only a foot ferry which runs from 10.00 until 17.00, or a 25 mile/40 minute drive to Woodbridge to reach the nearest bridge over the river!  Have a look at Google or similar maps. The foot ferry may suit non competitors.

Registration

The Race Office located in the Club lounge will be open from 1pm on Friday afternoon until a reasonable time that evening!  It will be open again at 09.00 hrs on Saturday morning.

Please check in as soon as you can, but definitely before racing begins, you need to allow time to reach the start area for Saturday’s first race which starts promptly at 13.00 hrs.

You will need to hand in the boat’s measurement certificate, with the buoyancy valid until the end of 30th August 2022 or later.  We will retain the certificate during the event, but please remember to collect it before you leave on Tuesday.  If you are borrowing a boat please make sure you or the owner can produce the certificate on the day.

The Sailing Instructions, trolley tally, plus (if needed) Allen boom stickers and Dinghy Shack bow stickers for your boat will be available to collect.

If either of the boat’s crew are under 18 a signed Parental Consent form will be needed, you may need to organise this in advance.  Similarly if a voluntary Medical Declaration is thought necessary then please consider this as well.

Important notices will be posted on the Official Notice Board located in the Club lobby so please watch for anything new.  The results will also be posted there as soon as possible after each race.

There will be a briefing at the Clubhouse on Saturday at 11.30 am.  Please try to attend as there will be local information you need to be aware of before sailing
