Moving the mast  heel back should induce more pre bend for an otherwise given set of settings. My settings include mast stepped in the middle of the heel plate.

My D8 has a Proctor C and a Kappa.  I have never used the latter, the previous owner purchased it but did not get on with it so it is virtually brand new. Was the mast a choice with new D8's?.

Suffice to say I find that I can get a lot of (controllable) bend in the P'C and can find no good reason to use the Kappa despite being generally on the heavy side.

You need to keep the boat more upright!

Yes and the crew helm weight issue as well as the nuts. though (yet declaring an interest on both fronts) if you are heavy / error prone then a heavy boat will not help you make up lost ground.  Just have to be more cunninggggggg (who spilt hot choclate on my keyboard?)

But how and how often / when do you measure it (overall weight)?
The only effective way is to specify certain components which are not affected significantly by short term moisture ie rope,  bare wood for inclusion in any weight prescription and leave the rest - like we are now.

Simon,

I would have said yes,  unless it is survival conditions,  down wind  a design 8 needs a lot of" urge" to get up 'n go .  In my experience down wind is our slowest point of sailing.  I have contemplated using the Kappa which came with the boat (2nd hand) though the original mast was (and which remains in use) is a Proctor C, to improve the down wind performance though I have followed the advice of others and stuck with the C.

If its not a personal thing (?) what is your weight and that of your crew?  I' m anywhere between 12 and 13+ St which can restrict my choice of crew(daughter now at Uni was a good fit at 8 wringing wet).

;DAs Cilla would say there's a lorra lorra lost plots going on here, isn't a large part of this being able to get good boat speed and good tactics to get round in front?

A tow is no substitute for sailing,

I have been given to believe that 12's will plane upwind,  even design 8's!  Is this just a story?

Scaling Dam SC now accept "old" and "new" as separate handicaps split at the point in my earlier posting.  All that's missing is 12's getting out there! !

See you all early next year?
