The rule has been there a long time - in the days of wooden single botttomed boats policing would have been much easier!

I suspect that it means any internal ballast fixed or otherwise which serves no other purpose.

Originally owned by Mike Hoyle of Henley SC when I was a member there.
Subsequent owners have included Mike Cooke, Emma Wilkins and she is now owned by Felix Newall-Smith of Spinnaker SC where I am now a member.
Felix won the Admirals Cup and the Beaston Goblet in her at Porthpean in 2006 - still using sails made by Mike Cooke.

Mumble was Paul Trevan's modification of the Whisper design  - I first came across her when she was in the ownership of Paul's great friend Roger Cherrill with my then unknown wife to be, Frances, in the front end!

Currently rotting away on the roof of my sister in law's garage where she has been since they moved to tha house circa 1979. The boat has been in the Kelly family for many years - my wife Frances use to crew in her in her teens! Frances I maus say has stood the test of time better than Zizz!

"lost in action" - Racing at Henley SC - Graham Pearce decided that he could manage to cross the bows of the Mississipi Steamer look-alike "Pink Champagne" to round a bouy and expected the large ugly pink river cruiser to slow down a bit perhaps - it didn't. There was a the horrible sound of splintering wood, a squeal from the crew and sudenly 3098 was no more. Graham managed to jump straight from his sinking charge on the the rail of Pink Champagne whilst his crew, Frances Searle, managed to keep herself under water long enough to avoid injury from the boat passing overhead! (this was in the days when personal buoyancy was seldom worn on the river).

I've just had another look at the (potentially)  excellent boat database. Someone has put an enormous amount of effort into creating this however it can be hugely improved by us owners and past owners putting bit more history and/or simple facts into it. How about resolving to spend just a few minutes a week to add  a bit about each Twelve you have ever owned over the years - it's really easy to add info and pictures, building up a fantastic record for the class and showing appreciation for the efforts of those who have already taken it so far - Do it yourself, if you haven't already, and encourage everyone you know with a Twelve or who has owned a Twelve to do the same.
