General National 12 chat / paint.....
23 Dec 2005, 12:13
Hello folks!
Anyone any idea what type of paint  (Make and shade) was last applied to N3130 aka Midnight Blues? I now own the boat as Nutty Shell and want to give her a touch up,(OOOh!  :o)  without having to remove all the old paint and starting again. As a clue, it is a kind of dark blue.

Thanks,

Jim.

Paul,
How about CO2 for a name? Carbon is after all, a BIG ISSUE 2-day...... ;D

Sorry about that. However, your crusader sounds interesting. Any pics?

Graham, that's really good.
I'd be interested in the rotating carbon lifting rudder, as well as the fixed rudder but the question is, would they fit the transom fittings of my Tigress (N3130)? I don't want to mess things up, since I'm using the fittings bolts to fix 2 upright stainless steel plates as a transom strengthener - one of the previous owners forgot to detach the rudder before running aground - OUCH!. If you give me the dimensions esp. of the fittings, I could then see if the rudder would fit. What sort of price were you thinking of? I'd pay the shipment to Munich. Alternatively, I might be flying over for the Burton Week in August to meet the rest of the association since my Parents live in the SW (If anyone needs a heavy but fit crew (13St) to hike out on a windy day......)
You have my email address.

Jim.

I've ordered one too. Whilst the main pictures are full of action, it's a bit of a shame that as far as I can see there are no coloured main pics of Admiral's Cup or Vintage boats racing. It is, after all a historical moment, which shall only come round again in ten years....

Mike, thanks very much for your advice. The basics will be practiced next season, after the freeze, which lasts until March.

Mike,
I am using a wooden block, shaped to the mast, in order to place the mast in the correct postion for light winds, since there is not much chance of overpowering the sail.  I have lowers, but they appear to be too long for their "screw tensioners" to have much effect. At the moment they just hang there, like spare shrouds at a wedding. Perhaps under the conditions prevailing I won't need them anyway and I should always keep the rig adjusted for full power i.e. minimum rake and prebend. It's my first full season next year, so at the moment i'm tweeking and tuning in my head whilst Nutty Shell's out of the water.

Thanks Driller.
I think my foredeck is strong enough to take the pressure. The question is, is my forehead...?  ;D

Anyone know what sort of mast ram I can fit to a tigress and where I might get one? At the moment I'm making do with a shaped wedge forward to the mast. Any info gratefully received.   :)

Mark,
Thanks very much for the tip. I shall try that when Nutty Shell comes out of hibernation at the end of the thaw in March, our season start here. Today we got our first taste of heavy snow in the Alps :D with more to come (now where are my skis? ;D )

I agree with you entirely N12 vote rigger - what the class needs is publicity - and this album entry would be more-or-less free publicity (bearing in mind what one American (President ?) said about there being no such thing as a free lunch) :). So come on, N12ers, pull out your centre boards and VOTE (OOPS! I've burst my brain.....) [Highly censored version, omitting derogatory remarks about other classes etc. etc......]

Hmm... Seems like the needle got stuck on Jimmy's reply... :))

The general problem to my mind seems to be competition with other classes. Question: how do you make the National 12 sexier? Answer: it depends upon how you market it. The key word is publicity. This however, requires time (mostly voluntary) and money. We as a class group should identify all those things which make a 12 (and skipper and crew) stand out from the rest. How about a questionnaire to be sent around to all N12 association members asking their opinion? A competition for the best caption would motivate many. Any sponsors out there? (Gill, Holts, Gull, etc. - come on you people!) Although newly bonded to Nuttyshell (N3130), I have a deep-filled sense of personal pride and satisfaction to have a boat which sets itself apart from the 420s, lasers,  &Co. (and not just because of her 25 years of age!). Remember, it's not a question of going fast to have class! (Please don't use that as a slogan!)
