Mike

I couldn't read this at the time but its on the 1st posting above

"A copy of the form may be found on the N12 web-site in the "Latest Stuff" box towards the top righthand corner. You need to print this, complete the details, and then send it WITH YOUR CHEQUE (payable to Trent Valley Sailing Club) to either myself or Paul Turner, our addresses are both in the handbook. If you cannot find your handbook, post a message here or email or call me and I will give you the details. Alternatively, we both hope to be at Notts County this Saturday and will take entries there"

Cheers

It was only a matter of time before you joined us!  Perhaps you'll come and see the northern fleet when you next visit Leeds  ;D

Hi Philip,

Trust the refit is going well and hope to see you up the dam when the ice has melted!

When you refer to sailing comittee do you mean the Class or SDSC?  Ian Holden and I have spoken re handicaps and he is aware of the handicaps for more aged boats.  I 'm quite content to leave the application of different handicaps to him,  the principal matter being the weight differential between new and old boats.

Philip David has a boat like yours and goes extremely quickly.  as also Neil McInnes. I think perhaps the difference in results between older boats is  the helm (and crew) and perhaps the condition of the sail ie matters outside the handicap system?

Ian (our Race commitee man) is understandably reluctant to inflict multiple (virtually personal ) handicaps on the race office.  In my view we should have fast /slow cutoff at N3411 ie Ian and MarkSimpson sail off 1093 the rest of us off 1104.  But perhaps we might achieve class status this year and just sail level pegging.

Dunno,  Ideas?

Did I count 9 UK boats? Hell of a turnout though I suspect Sydney (non liberraly speaking) is more attractive than some of our open events.  Overall 34th is pdg,  keep it up Mr M.

Welcome Kudders,

Whats the sail number,  we can then identify the boat and others can then provide their best advice,

Richard,

No snobbery from my point of view,  perhaps you have missed the point completely!  What I'm saying  is that for a special event the marginal cost is negligible over the cost of any other event - and I would have considered this to probably be within the grasp of all whether you sail an old ac boat or a brand spanking new boat,  but I also mean that it seems abit thin from topshop boys when the rest of us old ac types (that do opens) are not complaining  - I believe Medds alludes to this - and the event is in reality not excluding any 12 sailors.

Little Bo suggests otherwise though I think her non attendance is more to do with having little ones  rather than any thing else.  I recall not attending events for the lack of sitters more than anything else but tough,  you can't always reduce events to the lowest common denominator,  your children will eventual fit with your social requirements,  look forward to the centenary!

Problem with twelves is

a)divided fleet as a conseqence of being a development class (new boats cost real money - sorry Mike) and

b) being subject to a better off population where individuals (helms& crew) are so much bigger than they were some 70 years ago that it is more dificult to  put a competitive crew and helm together

The disparity in potential performance is significant enough to discourage people from joining us

Jimmy (bless) would like a boat of 13 ft, I think  understand where he is coming from but how can you have a N12 which is 13 ft??!  If we are not big enough you need to go elsewhere.

Many of us sail other boats (lasers,  ok's, 14's where we are less restrcted in our ability to get afloat and enjoy ourselves, competitively,  but still come back to 12 sailing.

I am quite competitive sailing a laser but despite being in the vanguard of the 12 gill fleet (lapped not just  overlapped) I probably get more satisfaction from my Design 8.

If I were to "design " a concept boat it would probably,  like many others contribution, in reallity not be a twelve but  a new class.  But would I still have the same problems like getting an adult crew who could be " within weight" with a 13 stone helm?  I have recently looked at merlin weights and consider that the small improvement in overall crew wt is not impressive when compared to the additional cost and a symetric spi!  If the association were to "improve"  the 12 class I suspect that rs200's and albacores would be the winners, and as I don't like varnishing guess where i'd be.

I suspect that a concept boat is likely to bust something which in most members eyes does not need fixing.

Graham,

Have the Gill results been checked?  Unless I have missed some thing my results (for AC & Family) don't look right.  I'm not bothered for myself cos I the general picture (must try harder) is almost certainly right but is some body else missing out?

See you Saturday,

Roger
