Matt

Are you coming to Spinnaker this Saturday? Graham and others will be there so you could compare rudder sizes

David, foul accepted, I've now done my 720  as a penalty   ;D

My miserable excuse was I was too busy discussing the plans for the open meeting with Simon to notice flags and hooters and all that sailing stuff !!!

Mike. and everyone, there will be food available at lunchtime and we might even get some tinnies in for after sailing. Any more requests for burgers please let me know  :P

Look forward to seeing you all

Dave Wilkins tells me he will be sailing at Spinnaker next Saturday. However, it's soooo long since he sailed a N12 (now that he is sailing a boat we dare not mention) that he arrived at the club today to do some jobs on the boat but had to bring his laptop with him as he couldn't remember how to tie a block to the boom!

So , if he's got his head in the bottom of the boat next week, forgive him, he's probably checking on the laptop how much kicker or cunningham to put on!  ;)

Oh, and Tom, Simon left early to sort your bottom out!

Cardboard tubes that carpets are wrapped around are very study and probably not cost you anything.
Someone once sent me a sail I think via Staples who used Christian Salvensen at the time. It was a very reasoable cost given it was a long tube.

Thanks Jerry. I was thinking of an easy way of securing mine. The simple ideas are always the best!

Hi Tom

As they say, bend it, mend it!

It was never my idea to take the bottom of your boat off, just trying to get Simon out of a hole (2 actually!)  ;D

We may have a boat or two to spare. I know Felix's boat is available, I'll mention it to Jo tomorrow, all you need then is a crew.

Will one burger be enough??  :P

The pins are made by RWO

Available from Marine Megastore. Probably Aardvark or Bloodaxe as well as they are commonly used by the foilers

Not sure where the problem is from your description

P&B's tuning guide gives an explanation of the effects of spreader deflection and rig tension

http://www.pinbax.com/index.asp?selection=Science%20Behind%20Sails&subsect=3.%20Mast%20and%20Spreaders

Without any rig tension on, are your spreaders deflecting the shroud forward or aft? With the former, as you tighten the rig, the shroud tries to straighten and the mast is pulled back and vice versa either inducing or restricting mast bend.

One issue may be the mast step. If the mast rests on the front of the heel plug, as the rig is tensioned, the heel plug tries to sit square on the mast step and induces the mast to bend back. I know on my boat, the step is not square to the normal mast position and I can affect the mast bend by which part of heel plug is in contact with the step and it can look as if the spreaders are not doing their job. However, once the main is up, the forces on the sail push the mast forward and the spreaders then work as intended.

Pick your oakham, holystone your decks, tar your sails, polish your brass, dust off those oilskins.

It’s Spinnaker N12 Open.

Saturday 14 June 2008

11:00 first race

4 races, 3 to count

Catering being confirmed

BBQ AFTER SAILING

A chance to put back those calories burnt off in the day, prime beefburgers from the Hamptworth Butchery, the finest in the area. BUT we will need to know if you will want one as they’re not your value burgers from Tescos.   :P

We now have 12 boats in the N12 fleet at Spinnaker and we are hoping for a good turnout to show just how keen we are. We already have confirmation of visiting boats, Graham, Mike and probably John, but we have plenty of water for a lot more.

Picking up from the recent thread on culls, this one will not be (from Spinnaker’s calendar).  ;)

The N12 class is a broad church and all are welcome, vintage, AC, DB, club sailors, champions. N12 open meetings are sociable affairs with the emphasis in having a good time with like minded folk and it definitely not about being a would-be hotshot. If you have any doubts about that, please call me (and if you are one, call me anyway and perhaps you give me some tips!)

So, let me know

That you are coming
How many beefburgers you will require
Any problems you need help with
Advice about the day
Crew issues (not the domestic ones, we all have those!)

If you can encourage others at your club to come, even better

Further details of the club at

http://www.spinnakerclub.co.uk/

We very much look forward to seeing you

Email me, call me, reply here

Cheers  :)

I too spent a thoroughly enjoyable days sailing on Sunday at Desborough at a really friendly club that was delighted to welcome us and which made a determined effort to do so.

To me, the bedrock of a class is its club sailors. I like open meetings, I’ve done a lot of them, but there is much value in maintaining interest in a class without thrashing about on the motorway system to go sailing, never mind the cost. Club sailing is the base of the pyramid on which a class sits.

If the N12 has moved to “touring” class that only sails at open meetings, then we have to accept that fact and that that number of sailors is ever going to be a restricted number with a limited future.

It then moves to a situation where the class has to request a club to hold an open meeting in order to have somewhere to sail and if the numbers aren’t there then neither are the invites from the clubs either.

If, however, a club wishes to devote time and (voluntary) effort in running an open meeting for a fleet that it sails, from a request from its members, then as long as that club understands the number of boats that are likely to attend, then no-one should stand in its way.

Cast your mind back to when you first started sailing, most, like me, cut our teeth on club sailing not being interested in open meetings (never mind not having the budget at that tender age). How do we encourage young sailors into 12s, eg students or graduates leaving university with a hefty overdraft/loan to pay off and who might be tempted into sailing a hi tech, interesting performance boat (such as any of the AC boats currently on the list) for less than a grand?  Not by restricting sailing to open meetings.

To me, its not a cull that’s needed but grass roots support for the benefit of us all.

For sale on ebay

Good news, second hand boats are selling which must mean there are people out there getting into the class.

I was printing a list to put up on the club notice board but the list is looking a bit out of date. There are still 5 Vintage boats for sale, but 5 of the 10 AC boats listed are marked as sold as is 1 of the 4 DB boats. If your boat is sold can you remove it from the list, it means I don't have to go through them and cross them off the list.

Spinnaker has 3 new boats this year and Jeremy Hartley seems keen to rejoin the class, all we have to do is get them all out on teh water at the same time . . . !

Latest Inshore Forecast outlook to Sat 0600 says SW 3-4 increasing 5-6 so we should get something like 3-4 - good chance to practice boat handling in a bit of breeze ;)

Can't promise sun all day but weather forecast is unsettled with clear or sunny spells and showers on each day, (Sat & Sun) some heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. Says it will be chilly but we shouldn't get any blizzards this weekend!

If you're coming, let me know, I might have to organise some rescue boats  !  :o

Reminder about coaching at Spinnaker.

Please reply if you are coming so that we can gauge numbers

Can't guarantee sunny skies, but it should be getting warmer by then. We are sheltered so we will be sailing whatever the weather (not that that prevented BOTH our boats being blown over in the recent gales!  :-/  ).
