Absolutely Fran. As Kean says they cost as much as some AC boats so why allow cheque book sailing? Surely its all about helm and crew and as far as possible technical change should still allow the best helm and creww to win?

Mine's fixed to the tiller 28 +  inches from the rudder pintles and is 4 ft long.

Can be a bit long but the secret seems to be when tacking (as per RYA Instructions ie pushing the extension out in front of you) torgrasp the extension about half way or so,  sliding your grip down as you go about.  Some times the crew can get aclip round the ear but it keeps them awake!).  but at that length the heavy helm can get comfortably far enough forward to keep the stern out of the water.

Bernard needs no encouragement,  but it can't have been a big bit if you spent sooooo long on the beach lookingggggggggg for it.

As for three booms Chadders I expect he is now able to build a wigwam rather than live in the dog house,  with his newly cut jib and three vastly over engineered poles (booms)! (sorry H).

I'm going to stay with folks at Salcombe over Easter could possibly crew on an occasion (but rather heavy - helm weight presently!) let me know if you're interested /desparate

My D8 has (and I believe from new) muscle boxes each sde with a similar shroud / block arrangement, control line  going back to the frame at the thwart and out to the side .... works fine for me.

The forestay / jib luff is a x2 x6 which (now I've replaced the cleat) works well also..

Was yours different,  why did you change?

Salcombe is superb either in a laser or a 12.  Last did it in a 12 (town week) in 2004.  Yawls don't take prisoners might being bigger than right,  often better to go round them in light airs especially when they get all social and raft up at the leeward mark!

Have a look at fotoboats gallery of town week 2004, yawls and you will see wall to wall yawls except one 12 (frame tg003074p) where yours, ever, is yotting in his first 12 (can't think why we are included with yawls).  I seem to recall a frame with the mess at the leeward mark social but this is not there now.Perhaps  Tom G can shed light on this.
