I varnished a clinker 12 on its side in a workshop too narrow to have it level. Worked OK, even using conventional varnish.

I sail on Hornsea Mere in East Yorkshire, which has a number of shallow areas which can catch out the unwary (the ANEYC National 12 meeting a few years back saw a number of breakages).

I have a hinged rudder with a shockcord downhaul which lets the blade lift (and drag) on impact, and pulls it down when clear. A cord uphaul lets you raise it when launching and landing - or to clear weed.

Designed by Dick Wyche in 1938, the Wrath design had flatter floors than the Uffa King, making it more stable, and more ready to plane. The photo shows the ribbed clinker construction, half length side decks, and the deck stepped mast. The car certainly dates the photo!

There's a photo of Proctor and the gaff main at the 1953 Burton in "The story of the National Twelves" (plate 9, facing p.49)

Some years ago I worked with Graham Camm on the vintage pages of the old website. As a result (and as a bit of an anorak) I've got a substantial collection of gifs & jpgs of 12s - not just vintage ones, but most of the ones that appear on advert sites, magazine sites, etc. I'll happily stick them on a CD and mail it to anyone with time to add them to the database, and limited scrupples about copyright.

Anyone interested can contact me via johnknowles at fsmail dot net

The main on ebay is a Ratsey & Lapthorne; I have 2 R&L's which are made from very thin terylene, and I don't think they would hold reef points. I took the bottom panel off the most stretched one and re-sewed the bolt rope (they do need a boom with a slot), which reduces the area and lifts the end of the boom, so more headroom and much less likely to dig in when gybing.

I've owned 1662 since 1999. When I bought her I was told I was the third owner from new. Sailed at Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire.
