Hi Guys
There is no club sailing on Sunday  (which is why there is no club catering) so we will have the water to ourselves!
Forecast is dry some breeze
See you there

Spinnaker Open June 2010

Mike
Sorry you won't be able to come to the Open this year but we could probably find a crew for you if you would like

Spinnaker will be sending as full a contigient as possible to Swanage this year (Sunday 8 August, details on the Swanage Sailing Club website). If you can get the trophy to Mike Day for him to bring down, we will take it on from here.

Typically, if you pull in a laid (rather than braided) rope under tension, it will tend to rotate over the block(s) and impart a twist into the rope, particularly if you have a rachet block in there with a grippy sheave, when you release it and there is less load on the rope. it will tend to run freely over the block and slide rather than grip which would reverse the twist put in when pulling in. Net result, a rope with twist in.
You possibly have a mainsheet that has some unnatural tension in the layup which is producing that sort of result or perhaps you regularly sail an irregular course that has more pulling on port, say, than on starboard!
You could try Rooster's Polylite that has less tendency to twist in the first place

Don't put alumiminium fittings directley onto carbo, the electrolytic action will cause corrosion and weaken the carbon. (our mast failed at the sail entry fitting that had been riveted on with an aluminium rivet, wasn't the reason it failed but that was the weak point)

If you must use pop rivets make sure they are stainless steel (for the reason above) and get the proper ones for carbon that bell out behind the mast and not the fitting you are trying to fix on. An ordinary pop rivet will widen the hole as you pull it up and you end up with a peg in an enlarged hole which has no holding power instead of a rivet (Simon Walworth's jib halyard sheave box zippered down the front of the mast because of this) Alternativley put a washer over the back of the rivet before you pull it up.

Well you try putting the flipping thing on your end then

Hi Bryn
Following our excursion to sunny Weymouth, we too have a broken Superspar that you can have once the insurance company is sorted and I've got the bits I want off it. Kicking strap loads can be an issue with a mast section but it would be worth a try.

If you want to drop your boat off, there is sailing taking place until about 5:00 pm although they might be later than that actually going home

Doesn't look as if we will have catering on Saturday so bring your own butties, but there will be tea and coffee,

Anyone thinking of camping on Saturday evening, the nearest campsite is at the Red Shoot Inn 2 1/2 miles away.

And if you need any more incentive, the landlord of the Inn brews his own beer and is holding a beer festival next weekend. So if you plan on camping there, it would be a good idea to book (but remember, it's a 11:00 start on Sunday) or you may wish to find somewhere away from the beer, Google "Camping Ringwood"

Cheers!

Hi Gerald
Nearest campsite is at the Red Shoot Inn 2 1/2 miles away - almost walkable.

Training should finish around 4-4:30 on Saturday

That sums it up well Jane

Reference is App A8 Series Ties to the Racing Rules see http://www.sailing.org/1987.php and download "RRS2009-12 Appendix A-C Updated" for the exact wording

I'm looking for a clew outhaul system on a carbon boom that has minimal friction. At the moment I've got a strap that goes round the boom fastened with velcro but it doesn't run freely

A neat solution I've seen has a s/s rod inside the boom with a slot in the top of the boom to allow a block to run along the rod and to which the mainsail clew is fastened. Anyone use this system? If so, is it hollow tube or solid rod, what is its diameter and length and how are the ends fixed to the boom?

Cheers

Less than 7 weeks to Burton Week (and counting!)

Some of us haven't been out on the water yet, some of us haven't finished building/fitting out our boats yet! What is certain is that we're all a bit rusty after a long cold winter.

The first of the N12 Coaching Days, and the only one before Burton Week, takes place on Saturday 24 April, the weekend after next.

Format will be familiar to you

Rigged and ready to sail 10:00 (coffee available from 09:00)
Quick chat, on the water session, video debrief
Break for lunch (I will confirm what catering will be available)
More on the water

Subjects will be what you want to cover but being at the beginning of the season, we'll be taking a good look at boat handling and turning corners

We're hoping for a good turnout from our expanding home fleet (6 entries already for Burton Week) so if you are coming, please let us know so we don't get caught out on rescue cover.

The following day Sunday 25 April is the second of the N12 Youth/Junior Series and anyone sailing in that is welcome to leave their boats overnight. Unfortunately we do not have any camping facilities at the club but there are a couple of camp sites close by in the New Forest.

Any queries, please get in touch and look forward to seeing you

Cheers

If you're looking for an AC boat within your budget, you could do a lot worse than 3217 Wendy Windblows. A well sorted boat with 2009 sails and all the bits. Philip David had a lot of success with the boat including winning the Admirals Cup at Burton Week last year
