Has anyone camped at Salcombe recently and can recommend a campsite within walking distance? and is it best to be town side or EP?

Thanks

The big question, Higher Ro is the best site, but a bit of a drive, It also suffers from sea fog if there is any about. It can be thick fog at Ro and sunny down below, if you have good legs you can walk  down to Salc..... Alstonfield is the closest, but I have not camped there since the 1987.   Soar Cove is to far out and a bit utility....Hope Cove is a bit exposed and a long way out, but handy for the beach at night.
Mill Bay has a National Trust car park, but you won't get parked late July 9.am. We have struggled during Merlin Week.(Early July)8)

We've camped at Ilton Farm and at Ilton Castle Farm. Both are off the Malborough to Salcombe road and theoretically walkable to town, but in practice its a fair way and hilly. Ilton is closer to the main road and there's the bus, Ilton Castle is closer to the boat park. Both are open field basic facility farm sites that can be exposed to the wind, so getting a pitch in the lee of the hedges makes a big difference.  After a week of wind and rain at Ilton Farm our tent did not make it home with us. Ilton Castle is a little lower into the valley and a bit more sheltered and is one of those sites with minimal advertising that people keep coming back to year after year. Definitely had a better family atmosphere when we were there. Not sure if we're coming this year but if we are we'll be at Ilton Castle.

HI  As locals (I grew up there but now we live an hour away so stay over in regatta)  who camp we've tried Higher Rew and Ilton Farm. Higher Rew- nice site but a drive in and usually use the park and ride.  Ilton Farm is nearer but has more basic loos etc. but has estuary views. Cycle path links to the town.  Some times we buy a boat park space at Batson/the dump for the week , this way you can park your boat by night and your car by day. One family camp every year at Karrageen but again it is a drive in. Some people camp at Prawle , basic but quite a community of annual hardy campers who congragate at the Pig's Nose pub and drive down to park in NT car park at Mill Bay.  The disadvantage is that evening activities at the club would be remote.
We're probably heading for Ilton or Ilton castle.  Alston Farm is also near by but I've not tried it since student days and that was a long time ago.
