Some classes of boat seem to specialise in good names (12s 14s cherubs etc) and some in not so good (they shall remain nameless). It has gradually dawned on me that the slower the class the speedier the name and the more radical the class the loopier the name.

My favourites so far are:

Cheese before bedtime - cherub
Spank the Monkey -SB3 and Finn
Passion Pudding - errr

What names have you seen that bring a smile to your face (or to any part of you, really)?

Best boat name I've seen was unfortunatly on a Gin Palace on the Thames (so not a sailing boat - but very apt!)  - CIRRHOSIS OF THE RIVER...

Nice sportsboat spotted in the Solent  "The Mutt's Nuts"..

Isn't naming your boat half the fun of the purchase?

Any guesses as to why I called 3435 'fraid not! ?

Answers on a postcard please.......................................................

I always remember the names of boats in the "punk" era which spawned some great ones. Rob Peebles was always a master of such names and this also made its way into the names of his designs, like Baggy Trousers. Pipedream, ..... well the less said about that as a name the better in this context. Stick safety pins into your nose or ears and come up with some more great names.

Our Nuttyshell was going to be called "Dirty Thirty" 'cos of its number N3130. I think Passion Pudding will keep it's name - it's great for those of us readily qualifying for the Tubbers Trophy!

Other names I had thought of : "Flying Flatiron"; "OH HECK!"; Transom Chip;  Brown and Baggy; Plaining Jane; Plane Water Please; A Splash of Soda; Wave Function (- became the name of my daughter's Optimist); Muddle II; Itchwellscratched; Red with Wellies; What - No Knickers?;  Pass the Port; Knockedmeaboutabit; Not Entirely Cricket; Pop's Legacy; BOOM BOOOM!; Daft as a Brush..  ..

Jim N3130 (Nuttyshell - don't ask why! Passion Pudding - ask Dare)
