The usual warm welcome, sunshine and sea breeze greeted the
Twelves for the Aldeburgh Open meeting for the Ganymede Trophy.
Over the five races there were four different race winners,
and with two discards (to enable the Sunday only competitors
to qualify) it was always going to be close. Jonathan Brown and
Lucy Horsley in Tonto set off well and won the first race from
Frances Gifford and Sophie Mackley who reeled them in on the
beat back, and nearly stole the win. In the second race it was
Jon Ibbotson and Helen Hunt (in Purple Turtle) that did enough
to escape the pack and win from Tonto.
Sunday dawned less sunny (soon rectified) but with a breeze
from the South that built throughout the day. Frances and Sophie
won the morning race, leaving a close race for the minor places
between Brown/Horsley, Antony Gifford and Henry Johnson, Ibbotson/Hunt
and the Pellings
eventually decided on the line in that
order.
In a bit more wind in the afternoon the fourth race went to
Gifford/Johnson who displayed a bit of local knowledge to get
past Brown/Horsley
leaving it open between the two Gifford
boats and Brown to be decided in the last race. In the end it
was Jonathan and Lucy that took the last race, and their second
win, to seal victory. Gifford and Johnson were pipped for third
overall on the countback by Ibbotson & Hunt.
