Desborough SC Ten boats competed on the picturesque River Thames at Shepperton
for Desborough Sailing Club's 56th Annual National Twelves Challenge
Trophy on Sunday 22nd May 2005.
A fresh SW wind and some strong gusts made for exciting sailing
and some spectacular capsizes. Race officer Ian Alexander set
a simple triangular course for the first race and then introduced
a sausage into the course right in front of the clubhouse for
the next two races which led to some spectacular gybes and often
capsizes, much to the delight of spectators. David Wilkins and
Susie Sallis from Spinnaker S.C. won all three races, even after
a capsize in the second. Bob and Maggie Murrell from Chipstead
S.C., last year's winners, were 5th in the first race and 2nd
in the next whereas Mike Storey and seven year old son Alex,
from Desborough, were 5th in the first and 2nd in the next. However,
the Murrells, who were leading the Storeys by 7 seconds in the
final race decided to retire after a capsize and the Storeys
went on to finish second.
