Royal Harwich Open Meeting 28- 30 May 2005

A total of 24 boats took to the water at various points over the weekend for the Bank Holiday open meeting.

Competitors were greeted by very windy conditions on the Saturday and our Race Officer set two great courses with lots of excellent reaching. Most of the fleet went swimming and not many finished the race. Antony and Jo Gifford won the first race with Jon Ibbotson and Heather Back in second and Tom Stewart and Liz Ross in third. The second race was just as exhilarating with Tom Stewart winning and Jon coming second again. This left Tom and Jon on equal points after the first day. Antony was fourth after Chris Mayhew and Helen Hunt managed to be on the correct side of the line for the start with one minute to go and a black flag up!

Sunday was drifty, bank holiday weather did not really allow the sea breeze to kick in and this definitely benefited Caroline Martin and Andrew Douglas who were somewhat overpowered the day before. The Burton Salver was sailed in the morning on the low tide. Tom won with Caroline in second and Jon third. Apart from that I am not sure what happened as I had to take to Tim Laws to A & E after he injured his knee during a capsize the day before. (he is ok now though!)

The afternoon races were very close and the lighter airs provided a mix up of results with some of the lighter crews having good races. Caroline won one of the races and Tom the other.

Monday was similar and the racing was postponed for a quite a while before any breeze appeared. Paul Pelling won the final race although it did not change the overall results.
