National 12 events 2005
55th Tynemouth Bailer 5National Twelves gathered at Tynemouth on Sunday 19th June for the 55th 'Tynemouth Bailer' open meeting and enjoyed three races over long courses set within a busy Tyne harbour. Mark and Emma Simpson continued their season of race wins on the northern circuit by taking two wins before lunch in a steady southerly force 3 and sunshine. In the first race they were pressed by Philip David and in the second by Howard Steavenson but on both occasions defended their lead to the finish. After lunch it was suggested that they had some pre-arranged 'agreement' with the captain of an unscheduled ship whose slow progress down the channel allowed them to cross ahead whilst the chasing pack were forced round its stern. Despite this cushion their lead diminished as the race progressed. In all three races there was plenty of place changing in the fleet behind. Both John and Alison Cheetham and Sue Jones and Sue Wright showed bursts of speed which always left them in contention. However the minor overall places were settled in favour of Howard Steavenson and James Brookes counting two second places, and Phil David counting a second and third.
