Frampton-On-Severn Open
Frampton on
Severn Sailing Club held its first National 12 Open on May 20th. It was one of
the SW Area series. Seven visitors joined three home boats. This produced
nine different designs ranging from a 48 year old Jack Holt Chimp to a 2006
Big Issue 2. The forecast SW force 3 failed to appear so the winds were light
and variable but were still sufficient for one capsize!
In the first race Nick
Martindale (1657) was over the line and returned. Gavin Willis
(3485) led at the first mark from Ian Cook (3467). He was overtaken during
the lap but regained the lead during the next lap. Meanwhile, in the
middle of the fleet four boats completely reversed their position order.
The ability to get the top batten to reverse its bend following a
tack or gybe proved vital to maintain
boat speed. Gavin Willis held the lead till the finish
while David Peacock (3502) overtook Ian Cook to get second place.
Race 2 saw Gavin
Willis start at the opposite end of the line from Nick Martindale and
just lead at the first mark. Nick Martindale chased him all the way getting
within two boat lengths at times but was unable to get ahead. Dave
Peacock gained two places on the last lap to be third at the finish.
Lower down the fleet Steve Loudon (3286) gained a place less than two
metres from the finish line.
Having won the meeting Gavin
Willis sat out the final race. This resulted in a duel between
David Peacock and Nick Martindale who finished in that order. Ian Cook pulled
up to third place. This gave David Peacock second overall from Nick
Martindale who was sailing a National 12 for the first time.
