Solway Yacht Club
The 2nd meeting in the 2007 Lairwell series took place over the weekend of 5 and 6 May, hosted by Solway Yacht Club. This year the N12 fleet joined up with the Scottish Enterprise and RS200 fleets for the meeting, and all 3 fleets enjoyed 2 days of first class racing combined with a fantastic curry night at the Club on Saturday night.
The weather forecast for Saturday had been promising blue skies and light winds, so the sailors were somewhat surprised to find decidedly cloudy skies and winds which were said to be ‘at the top of a 4’, and the forecast of a sail in those conditions out in the bay meant that some decided to stay ashore and watch from the various vantage points along the estuary. Bernard Clark and Elaine Ross reveled in the conditions claiming 2 firsts, with Stewart Miatt and Kathryn Kelly claiming 2 seconds and, making it a 1, 2, 3 for Yorkshire Ouse, (although they were sailing under the burgee of their ‘other club’, SYC for this event, Ian and Margaret Purkis with 2 thirds.
Sunday dawned wet and gusty and once again some decided to stay ashore (winds in the bay were forecast to be considerably higher than the day before) but the fleet were delighted to be joined by Mark and Emma Simpson. The Simpsons showed a clean pair of heels in both races, hotly pursued by Clark and Ross. Miatt and Kelly sat out race 4 safe in the knowledge that their performance the day before had given them second place. With both races sailed in strong winds within the confines of the estuary, those on the shore had a good view of the various capsizes and also the long plane back to the dinghy park. The class thanks Solway Yacht Club for a fantastic weekend, and the Enterprise and RS200 fleets for sharing the meeting and making it financially viable for the club. A great weekend and one which we will be looking to repeat in 2008.
