Scottish area 2008 write up

The Scottish series has now concluded and it’s been a great year for the National 12 fleet north of the border, with new boats coming into the fleet and existing boats being sold on to new recruits to the class.  We started the year with no double bottomed boats residing north of the Border and end it with 2, and we look forward to continued expansion of the fleet.

As usual, at the front of the fleet there was a battle between Mark Simpson and Bernard Clark for line honours and this year they’ve both ended the series on the same number of points and we’ve now realised we have no agreed means of splitting the tie.  We’ve used ‘who had the best result when they last sailed against each other’ for this year, which gives Mark the trophy.  It was a battle well fought with both helms counting 2 firsts and discarding second places.

Angus and Rohan Beyts really hit form this year in their new boat ‘Killer Custard’.  The training at Ripon SC, which tested all those present due to strong winds, got them off to a great start and we now look forward to seeing how they will get on with their even newer, double bottomed, boat, Agent Orange.  They finished 3rd overall in the series and have also taken part in some non-N12 events, finishing 6th in a Windward/ Leeward event held at Yorkshire Dales SC.

Ken and Andrew Mitchell put in a great result at Largs to claim 4th overall, with Tim and Seb Gatti showing that Vintage boats can still sail on the sea to claim 5th.  The Bryants claimed 6th place with their Baggy.

So here are the series statistics:

  • 6 boats qualified
  • 14 boats competed
  • Double bottomed – 28%
  • Admirals Cup – 44%
  • Vintage – 28%

We look forward to another great season in 2009.
