NATIONAL 12 OPEN MEETING

With weather predictions for light winds keeping away many visitors the
small turnout was welcomed with sunshine and almost a flat calm. However the wind and cloud increased during
the day, with some pleasant sailing.
In the first race Mike Rain and Jane Hill led from the start. Brian Herring and Ros Stevenson were
overtaken by James and Toni Whitehead for second, after Brian was seen to be
flailing about wildly as he nearly fell out of the boat! Guy Benson and Tim Walton held on to fourth
throughout and, after a 720° penalty, Mike
and Sarah Smith finally overtook Alan and Peter Mason at the penultimate mark
for fifth.
The second race was a level start, but Mike Raine
soon forged ahead and retained the lead throughout. James Whitehead was battling against a sticking top batten as
Mike Smith in fourth was catching up, but he eventually got away to overtake
Brian Herring and retain second. At the
last mark disaster struck for Brian and Ros as they capsized to windward and
Mike and Sarah Smith sailed serenely past for third place.
With only five boats in the third race and 1st
and 2nd overall practically decided, it was a race between Brian
Herring and Mike Smith for third overall.
Mike managed to catch Brian up at the third mark, but just touched his
stern and the fleet sailed past as he did another 720° penalty! Mike Raine and Jane
Hill were in the lead all the way, but Mike Smith eventually overtook Guy
Benson and Alan Mason to chase Brian Herring again. In fiercer winds Brian hung on, especially on the last beat back
to the line, to gain 2nd place.
