Annandale Open Meeting

      Annandale S.C. held its National
Twelve Open Meeting at Lochmaben on April 30, with bright sunshine and a
light variable wind which promised tricky conditions on the Castle
Loch.   Ian Simpson and Jessica Campbell, sailing “Two Fat Ladies” for
the first time, launched just in time to hit the start line on the “gun”
for the first race.  They then sailed into a lead which was never
seriously challenged.   John and Georgie Brooks took second place, hotly
pursued by Howard Chadwick and Helen Nicholson in third. Angus Beyts
sailing a China Doll in his first National Twelve open meeting, was well
up with this leading group.  There was much place changing in the rest
of the fleet culminating in a tightly bunched run to the finish.   Race
Two saw John Hugo and Adam Firby port tacking the fleet at the start,
then losing four places doing turns at the windward mark.  Mark Simpson
and Rory Payne passed John Brooks to take the lead, which they held to
the finish.   Brooks was second and Chadwick third.   A steady south
westerly breeze filled in before the third race.   In spite of the
changed conditions, the same three boats finished in first, second and
third places, after Chadwick and and Nicholson had fought their way
through the fleet.   John and Georgie Brooks’ three second places gave
them overall victory in this event, which is  part of both the Lairwell
Trophy and the Border Trophy Series.
