Vintage Open Earlswood Lakes
British Waterways pulled the plug on Earlswood Lakes this year, so
the decision to move the open was made at the beginning of July. Olton
Mere Sailing Club very kindly agreed to lend us their water. The day
dawned very overcast and muggy, with no wind. Three visitors attended
the open meeting, Brian Herring crewed by Ros Stevenson, Brian Kitching,
crewed by George Kitching, and Ken Goddard crewed by Bethany James Fagg,
(from Earlswood). This year for the first time four plankers were
allowed to join in, which allowed myself, Diane, with a Cheshire cat,
Tabitha Twitchet number N2835 crewed by Laura Guest.
The 1st race started on time sailing to the Derwent Reservoir rules.
Brian H made a mistake at the first mark trying to round it the wrong
way. Brian K then pulled away and Diane came in 2nd.
The 2nd race started in, if possible, less of a breeze than the
first. Under the handicap rules Brian H started 1st, Diane 2 minutes
behind and Brian K another 2 minutes behind. Brian H managed to drift
around the course in front, and Brian K caught Diane. Lunch was very
pleasant under at tree, and then the storm started. If was decided to
cancel the third race.
A frustrating day from start to finish, but one we shall remember.
Diane Thornton N2835
Overall Results:
1st Brian Kitching and George
2nd Brian Herring and Ros
3rd Diane Thornton and Laura.
