A small gathering of National 12 sailors gathered
at Spinnaker on 1st July to enjoy the racing, sunshine,
breeze and idyllic location. Four races were sailed with the best 3 to
count. The sun shone and the breeze was pleasant force 2 for most of the
day.
Felix Newall-Smith and Izzie Gill-Taylor took the
early lead in the first race in 3154 leading round the windward mark
with a tightly packed fleet behind. David Wilkins and Adele Cameron
(3481) managed to gain places by sailing below the fleet on the broad
reach past the island and finally caught crept past Felix on the next
leg. These 2 boats stretched their lead over the followers with Steve
and Robbie Adshead finally taking 3rd place.
In the 2nd race there was much place
changing but by the final run, before a very short beat to the finish it
looked as though 1st & 2nd would either Mike Day
and Anne Murch (3496) or Steve and Robbie. With the latter challenging
all the way down the run the two went higher and higher leaving just
enough time for David & Adele to pass both, sailing the straight line on
a gentle gust below them. The Adsheads’ challenge was successful and
they gained the inside position at the mark to take 2nd.
Races 3 & 4 saw David & Adele taking a fairly early
lead, which they held to finish with Mike and Anne 2nd and
the Adsheads 3rd.
