Avon Sailing Club Open Meeting 21st April 2002

Sunshine and a freshening breeze were enjoyed by the 9 Twelves attending Avon SC’s open on 21st April.

A good variety of designs were sailed with an even bigger mix of crew weights ranging from around 17 to 24 stones.

Race 1 saw Fi Lucas using her local knowledge to good advantage from the start to take an early lead but she lost her way at the second mark taking it in the wrong direction, allowing the following pack past when she returned to re-round.  A close race followed between Colin & Natasha Evans, Tim Laws & Jinny King and David & Frances Wilkins.  The Wilkins’ managed to gain the inside position next time round the leeward mark and took advantage of clear wind to build a comfortable lead.  Team Evans finished second closely followed by Tim Laws.

Race 2 was won by the Wilkins’ who got off to a flying start in pole position.  The secure lead they had established by half way round was somewhat diminished when they filled up on the beat, falling victims to a ruthless header.  Places 2 & 3 saw another battle between Laws & Evans with the places reversed in this contest.

Race 3 saw Fi Lucas as the early leader again, however this time a capsize put paid to her ambitions.  The usual battle between Laws and Evans followed with them each taking the lead in that order only each to give it up following a capsize.  Simon Hinks & Tom Jeffries took advantage of these mistakes to win.  The Wilkins had sat this race out due to excessive crewing blisters resulting from new thin sheets and no gloves.
