Vintage series results (Witchcraft bailer)

Vintage Series 2018

Brian Herring and Ros Steavenson must be congratulated for travelling to the most meetings and winning the Vintage Series; sadly they were the only boat to qualify with three results to count. Next year should be an improvement as some key players who were absent this year are threatening to return. Also it only needs those who did two events to do three and we are up and running.

Vintage Champs 2018

The Derwent Handicap on Saturday June 16th and the Vintage Championships on Sunday June 17th were great fun but only attracted three entries for each day. Congratulations to John and Catherine Sears for winning both events. This weekend has always been our most popular event and many thanks to Paul Turner, Janet and Kevan for all their hard work. Maximum support is needed here please and I believe that 2019 could be a renaissance.

Burton Week 2018

No vintage boats! What a shame! I know of several vintage and non-vintage owners who will no longer attend Burton Week because for them too much time is spent on the water or it is simply not possible for them to sail. Typical issues are:

  1. Too long a time to sail out and in.
  2. Too windy for the more fragile vintage boats.
  3. Too much time wasted between back to back races.
  4. The races are too long for the slower boats, many of whom have been lapped by the new much faster designs.

Admittedly, we can’t do much for the more fragile boats and I believe that for most vintage boats the upper limit on the sea is 16kts mean wind speed.

By far the biggest gripe is carrying on sailing for ages after the leaders have finished, especially when you have been lapped. I don't think we deal with back-markers at championships very well and know of several people who have complained about the additional time that back-markers can take to finish, including the back-markers.
